On the topic of spirit points and cheering/chants: this portion of the event is 100% voluntary and is done in addition to the tournament—it is not the main focus of MIST. Spirit awards are completely separate from academic awards and do not factor into the overall team scoring in any way. These moments often stand out and are memorable because they are not part of students’ normal day-to-day experiences, and they tend to be highlighted on social media for that reason. In reality, spirit activities account for roughly an hour across the two-day event.

It’s also important to clarify that spirit points are not awarded for being the loudest. There are many alternative ways teams can earn spirit points that do not involve cheering at all, such as :

encouraging teammates, being respectful and kind to others, participating in a scavenger hunt, posting a team photo on social media, or taking a photo with an organizer or coach.

Everyone has different levels of comfort and modesty, and if spirit activities are not something a student is comfortable with, they are not required to participate.

Jazakum Allah Khairan!
